The Hi-Desert Calendar
Greetings!
Well, it's cooler, and darker a lot of the time now. Autumn is in the air, and it feels goooooooood.
I'd like to thank all of you who came out to hear British folksinger Richard Grainger this past week - it was a great concert, wasn't it? I'd like to specially thank JT Village Realty for their support, as well as our series sponsors, and the Really Shooos, for joining me on some rowdy sea music to start off the evening. The Old Peculier was great (thanks Beatnikians!), and so was our audience. Thank you all.
Grainger, who hails from the moors of northern England, has taken a liking to the desert, and says he'd like to return next fall for another go 'round. Next time, we'll have to get him to tell his story of winning a family vacation. It's hilarious.
Up next, we've got the highly talented British actress, Jacalynne Flax, coming to perform the play, "Shirley Valentine," at the Hi-Desert Playhouse, October 21-23. The weekends' performances will be a benefit for the Playhouse, which is in dire financial jeopardy. If help doesn't come through soon, the doors to the best combination theatre and musical venue in this area, will shut.
Please, let's not let that happen. I strongly urge you to take a night out and see "Shirley Valentine." You'll enjoy yourself, and you'll be helping the Playhouse be able to continue bringing us its tasty lineup of cultural treats for all to enjoy.
If you are looking for a way to become culturally involved with our hi-desert home and to help it thrive, please consider becoming a member of the Hi- Desert Playhouse Guild, or making a donation toward the costs of running that wonderful theatre.
Thanks as always for your support. The October/November issue of the magazine is out. I hope you enjoy it.

Desert Music Foundation Fifth Annual Scholarship Concerts Recitals
The Desert Music Foundation will be hosting its fifth annual Scholarship Concerts and Recitals Program (formerly the J.A.M.S. Scholarship Recital Series) at the Hi-Desert Playhouse December 3 and 4 at 2 p.m. Student musicians of all ages and all instruments in the Morongo Basin and Coachella Valley need to prepare now and submit their application no later than November 7 to participate either as a ãConcert Participantä or as a "Scholarship Contender." Finalist contenders for scholarships will be announced by the end of November. All participating musicians must be sponsored by a current music instructor.
"Student musicians are able to gain experience performing as a recitalist on one of the two days, or they may participate as a scholarship contender," explained Jarrod Radnich, founder of the program.
The scholarship program has two divisions for competition: Instrumental and Vocal. Student musicians interested in the competition aspect of the concert program are urged to begin now on their scholarship contender packet as thoroughness carries heavy points in the preliminary screening process. All performing student musicians, whether they compete or not, receive written critiques from our panel of professional adjudicators. "When student musicians work so hard for months for their five minutes on stage, they deserve to know what worked, and what they might improve on during the next year of studies," noted Radnich.
The local Rotary International Club will be participating with scholarships and adjudicators, as well as taking the top scholarship winners on to a larger regional Rotary International competition in Winter of 2006.
Scholarship applications can be found at The Basin Wide Foundation Office, Brown's Music Store in Yucca Valley, the Joshua Tree Parks and Recreation Office, or at the 29 Palms Parks and Recreation Office. You can also send a self addressed stamped envelope (mail time permitting) to: DMF Scholarship Concerts Recitals, HC-1, Box 1092, Joshua Tree, CA 92252, or call (760) 366-0270 for more information. The Desert Music Foundation is a committee of the Basin Wide Foundation, a Non- Profit 501.c3 organization.
