Legendary Moody Blues in concert
Thurs, Nov. 17, 8 p.m.
at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino's special Events Center
By Ed Munson
The Moody Blues have been playing and touring steadily since about 1963 when their first Blues-band hit Go Now climbed the charts.
Shortly thereafter, enter Justin Hayward and John Lodge who, together, took the band to unimagined heights with the release of the seminal album Days of Future Passed. That album was the first to explore Rock music with a full orchestra, in this case the London Festival Orchestra. So astoundingly popular was this album that it spawned mega hits such as Nights In White Satin and Forever Tuesday (Tuesday Afternoon) and those two songs are still considered some of the very best in Rock and continue to get heavy airplay on Pop and Classic Rock stations.
In more than four decades, the band has produced some 26 albums and a slew of hits over the years. Space here does not permit an extensive history lesson, so if you want that, go to www.moodyblues.co.uk and check out their site.
I was a bit disappointed in their site. I have more of their albums than they do on the site. But, they do have some excellent T-shirts and other items, some of which will be available for sale at the concert.
In 1993, the Moody Blues, ever the class act, began a revolutionary tour at the Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver. The outdoor concert featured a full orchestra and the concert was recorded for audio and video and both are available. That tour featured the band toting along their own conductor and picking up a full orchestra at each concert city. I was very pleased to see this legendary band with a full orchestra and it was an experience I will never forget.
I have also seen them just as the band, although these days they also have a variety of backup musicians and singers to fill out the sound.
It really doesn't matter. Moody Blues music is music to sit back, drift away and enjoy.
If you haven't got your tickets yet, I suggest you hurry. They've been here before but you never know if this will be the last chance you get to see the Moody Blues in concert. Go Now.
Tickets are priced at $29, $39, $49 and $59. All seats are reserved. www.fantasyspringsresort.com or (800) 827-2946.
24th Indio Powwow
The 24th Indio Powwow will be held over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 25-27, but for the first time, in the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians' new Special Events Center.
Part of the City of Indio Festivals, hundreds of American Indians from across the United States and Canada will come together to trade, socialize and honor feats of bravery and achievement.
Fall gatherings celebrated the successful harvest and allowed people to come together to feast, dance, sing and hold ceremonies. They will come to the powwow in elaborate regalia to show their skill in dance and singing competitions.
A highlight of each powwow is the Grand Entry, when all the dancers form a procession, winding around the arena in a clockwise direction. Preceding the dancers are the Eagle Staff and the color guard. At the Indio Powwow, grand entries are scheduled for 8 p.m., Friday, November 25, 1 and 8 p.m., Saturday, November 26, and 1 p.m. Sunday, November 27.
Visitors to the Indio Powwow will have an opportunity to taste Native American foods such as Indian fry bread and shop among 80 vendors for jewelry, weavings, dream catchers and other types of Native American art.
There are also opportunities to join dancers in the arena during noncompetitive intertribal dancing. For each day of the powwow, admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for children 12 and under. For information, call (760) 238-5770, or visit the Cabazon website at www.cabazonindians-nsn.gov or the Resort website at www.fantasyspringsresort.com

FOURTH ANNUAL DESERT SHOWDOWN INVITATIONAL AMATEUR BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP COMES TO SPOTLIGHT 29 CASINO OCTOBER 19-23
"Olympic Preview" Event Brings Amateur Boxers from Across the Country
Muhammad Ali said, "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."
Now amateur boxers from around the country will take a risk in the hopes of accomplishing one goal: winning the 4th Annual Desert Showdown Invitational Amateur Boxing Championship.
The championship, which is sanctioned by U.S.A. Boxing, is largely considered a stepping stone to the Olympics, and this year it is bigger than ever. This year's championship enters the ring at Spotlight 29 Casino October 19-23 and is open to the public. The event begins October 19. Weigh-ins daily at 7 a.m., and fights begin daily at 1 p.m.
The event brings fighters from California and across the U.S., from Alaska to Florida, from Hawaii to New York. Participating fighters who range in age from 17-22 and in weight from 106-201+, are ranked in the USA Book and have fought 40 or more bouts, will be battling for the BCR (Bert Colemia Romero) Amateur World Championship title in 11 weight categories.
The five-day event is produced by the Thermal Boxing Association, which exists primarily to help kids in Southern California by getting them off the streets, teaching them important lessons about discipline and coaching, providing them with mentors, giving them a sense of success and accomplishment, and showing them that they can achieve their goals and dreams.
General admission tickets are $6.00 for each day for adults; children age 3-12 are $3.00. Five-day event passes are also available for $20 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets are available now at the Spotlight 29 Casino Gift Shop and at the Spotlight Showroom Box Office on the day of the show.
Speaking for Thermal Boxing Association, Boxing Coach Ralph Romero said, "We deal with a lot of what people call "at-risk" youth. We want to teach these kids to take a risk on themselves. We want to help them learn that they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to, if they have the discipline to develop the skills they will need to reach their goals."
The fights are presented by Thermal Boxing Club, Everlast and ASEP All-Star Entertainment. Sponsors include California Ring Girls, Grafix Star, Jewel Date Company, Shields Date Gardens, Spotlight 29 Casino, Telefutura, Title Boxing and Univision, 94.7.
Isaac Hayes in Concert
Music Legend Isaac Hayes at Spotlight 29 Nov. 5 8 p.m.
Hall of Famer, Chef, King.
He has almost as many titles as he has #1 records. Call him by the title of your choice, but the name Isaac Hayes is synonymous with one thing above all - the smoothest soul music ever made.
Now, Hayes is coming to Spotlight 29 Casino for a one-night-only performance that is sure to set the standard for all performers to follow who come to the Coachella Valley.
Hayes performs in the casino's Spotlight Showroom on Saturday, November 5. Showtime is 8:00 p.m., and tickets are $60, $50, $40 and $30. Tickets are available now at any Ticketmaster location, at the Spotlight 29 Casino Gift Shop and at the Spotlight Showroom Box Office on the day of the show.
Hayes, who has been coronated King of the Ada coastal district of Ghana in western Africa, is probably the only king in history with an Oscar, Grammy awards, #1 gold records, an animated TV series, a radio show, two restaurants, a best-selling cookbook, and top secret barbecue sauces.
Hayes has made an indelible mark on American music history. He has more than 20 albums to his name, has scored five films and has an enviable string of #1 albums and #1 singles. A prolific songwriter, Hayes was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2005.
Hayes is also the first African-American composer to win an Oscar for Best Score for his soundtrack to the film Shaft, and its theme song became a #1 hit. Hayes has also appeared in 34 films, and became exposed to a new generation as the voice of "Chef" on TV's pop culture phenom South Park.
Hayes created what was known as the Memphis Sound, working with artists like Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Booker T & the MG's, the Mar-Keys, the Bar-Kays, Rufus & Carla Thomas. The sound transformed pop music and was absorbed by artists like Elvis Presley and Ray Charles, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Born into poverty about thirty miles south of Memphis in 1942, Hayes dropped out of high school and was later helped back into school by his caring teachers. Later, he was persuaded by his high school guidance counselor to enter a talent show. "When I finished, the house was on its feet, man, and I was a hit," he said. His teachers' dedication have inspired Hayes to support education through the World Literacy Crusade and to create the Isaac Hayes Foundation.
